Happy Brain Chemicals

Each of the following brain chemicals helps boost the feeling of happiness and satisfaction along with controlling stress and anxiety. Each chemical plays a very important part in your everyday life.

1. Dopamine- Dopamine can work in two different ways. When it is released in large amounts it creates feelings of pleasure and reward, which motivates you to repeat that behavior. Whereas when dopamine is released in low amounts, it causes reduced motivation and decreased enthusiasm for things that would excite more people.

2. Serotonin- Serotonin in your brain regulates your mood. It is often known as the body's “feel good” chemical. When serotonin is at normal levels, you may feel more focused, stable, happier and calmer.

3. Oxytocin- Oxytocin is linked to warm, fuzzy feelings and may lower stress and anxiety levels. Oxytocin regulates our emotional response and pro-social behaviors including trust, empathy, gazing, positive memories, and positive communication.

4. Endorphins- These types of chemicals get released with exercise. The chemicals interact with the receptors in the brain and reduce the perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to morphine.

There are different things to do that change and/or increase the levels of these brain chemicals. Activities such as cooking, exercising, and listening to music can help increase these levels and can overall make your body feel good. If someone is in need of these levels to increase, there are different medications and supplements that also increase happy brain chemical levels.

Always take care of your body and listen to what it wants/needs.
